The Schoolhouse Theater

Friday, March 31 - 7:30 PM

Composer/arranger Wil Swindler provides a unique, unforgettable take on the music of the Fab Four featuring favorite hits as well as deep tracks including music from "Abbey Road," "Magincal Mystery Tour," The White Album," Sgt. Peppar's," and more.  Of the music featured on this concert, Swindler says, "I try to take the essence of each tune, what really makes it memorable, and expand on that within the context of modern jazz.  I have great respect for the Beatles as musical artists, and I love digging deep into their music to celebrate all the things that I, and many others, love."

Adding to the intrigue of this special ensemble is its remarkable instrumentation.  The Elevenet features traditional jazz instruments (Alto and Tenor Saxophones, Trumpets, and a Trombone) as well as less traditional sounds including Bass Clarinet, Alto Flute, and French horn.  Paired with a traditional jazz rhythm section, this unique ensemble allows for the power of a big band and the intimacy of a jazz quartet or even a classical chamber ensemble.

Wil Swindler is the recipient of the 2008 Gil Evans Fellowship and has performed with jazz greats Toshiko Akiyoshi, Arturo Sandoval, Gary Smulyan, Steve Wilson, and John Fedchock. The Elevenet has one CD, Universe B, available from OA2 Records.  For more info, visit www.11jazz.com or www.wilswindler.com.

"Wil . . . . create[s] challenging music that is conceived to showcase the talents on these musicians, and the players respond with performances worthy of the writing. . . . there's major-league musicianship present in abundance."

~ Bill Kirchner, New York City  jazz historian, record and radio producer, and author of liner notes for COLUMBIA/MOSAIC's Miles Davis and Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings
