Wiley and the Hairy Man

Wiley is a young man of small ambition and even smaller confidence. Happy to lay around all day with his loyal Dog, Wiley argues when his mother tells him to venture deeper into the swamp to collect firewood. Hidden in the depths of the swamp is the notorious Hairy Man, a fearful giant who feasts on humans! When Wiley is suddenly thrown into a confrontation with the dreaded Hairy Man himself, will he be able to “conjure” up his inner strength and confidence?

First put to paper in 1932 as part of the New Deal's Federal Writer's Project, Wiley and the Hairy Man is a classic Southeastern folk tale in the oral tradition that draws from native folk wisdom. Living on the edge of the swamp with his mother (the county's best conjuring woman), Wiley is terrified of the Hairy Man. With the help of his crafty mother and his trusty dog, Wiley must match wits with his nemesis. In order to drive away the Hairy Man, Wiley must trick him three times. Using his own wits, and summoning his own courage, Wiley is finally able to face his own fears and outsmart the Hairy Man. Written by Suzan Zeder, this rhyming play is sure to be a big hit with children age five and up.

Book by Suzan Zeder. Music by Harry Pickens. Lyrics by Suzan Zeder and Harry Pickens.
